Burbank

Burbank is a prominent city located in Los Angeles County. The population at the time of the 2010 census was 103,362. Burbank has been called the ‘Media Capital of the World’ and lies just a few miles north east of Hollywood. Various entertainment and media enterprises are based in or have significant locations in Burbank. These companies include Disney, NBC, Warner Brothers, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and ABC. The Bob Hope Airport calls Burbank home as well. Burbank stretches across two specific areas. Its civic center, main neighborhoods and downtown are built along the slopes and foothills that leading into the Verdugo Mountains. The other parts of the city are in the flatlands on the eastern side of the San Fernando Valley. The city got its name from David Burbank, a dentist and entrepreneur originally from New Hampshire who settled in the area. The Bob's Big Boy Restaurant in the city that was built in 1948 is the oldest remaining Bob's Big Boy in the entire country. In 1994 it was made a California historical site. It was designed by Wayne McAllister and is located on 4211 Riverside Drive. The eatery features an open kitchen and big picture windows and a soaring pylon sign, all of which are traits of Googie style architecture. In 1992, the restaurant's owner tried to destroy the structure and replace it with an office building or shopping center, but the eventual landmark designation made it legally more difficult to make any changes. Burbank is considered a pioneer in the field anti-smoking public areas. In early 2011 Burbank voted through a law making smoking in multi-family residences sharing ventilation systems, ie apartments, illegal. The law is going to be in effect starting in summer 2011. The new anti-smoking law, which also prohibits smoking on patios and private balconies in multi-family housing facilities, is thought to be the first of its kind in California. Since 2006, it has been illegal to smoke at all on city-owned properties, including the Chandler Bikeway, downtown Burbank, and any other pedestrian areas and sidewalks. Separate from city population, an estimated 100,000 people come to work in Burbank every day. The physical traces of the city's past in the aviation industry remain. In 2002, the Burbank Empire Center opened with aviation as the theme. The center, which cost the Zelman Development Company $250 million to build, sits on Empire Avenue at the site of what was formerly Lockheed Martin. By 2003, many of the retailers and restaurants at the center were among the top national performers in their respective franchises, if not the premier locations. The Burbank Empire Center now makes up over 10% of Burbank' city sales tax revenue, and this is not even including the nearby Costco, which is also a part of the Empire Center development.
